The right of public access

"Not disturb – not destroy"

"Not disturb – not destroy"

In Sweden, we have a unique right to access the woods and countryside, allowing us all to enjoy the beautiful nature. However, as guests here, there are some things to consider. There are actually responsibilities that we, as users of the "allemansrätten" (everyman's right), need to take into account, towards nature and wildlife, landowners, and other people.

Often, you are on a private landowner's property, and showing consideration is essential for us to be welcome in the future. Adhering to the principle of "do not disturb – do not destroy" is a good starting point.

Some things to pay extra attention to

1. Feel free to dress colorfully when you are in the woods. Then you will be easier to spot for both hunting teams and your company while on the forest trip.

2. Never walk on sown fields, or other cultivated land, as the crops can easily be damaged. Also avoid walking on newly planted forest areas.

3. In protected areas, such as national parks, nature reserves or animal and plant protection areas, special rules apply which may mean that the right of public access is limited. The regulations are often posted on signs when you enter a protected area. Many times there is also other information that tells why the area is valuable and has been protected.

4. Show concideration for the animals in pastures so that they are not frightened and also for wild animals in the forrest. It is extra important in the spring when many cubs are born. If you have a dog with you, you must keep it under extra close supervision during the period March 1 to August 20. Always take into account the home peace zone, ie the area/plot closest to a residential building.

5. Those who live there have the right to their own private area and to be undisturbed. Do not drive on private roads or roads with driving bans. The sign is there for a reason.

6. Park in a designated area and be extra careful so that no road or barrier is blocked and that emergency vechicles or agricultural machines easily can get past.

7. It is allowed to make fire in nature, as long as it takes place under controlled conditions. To reduce the risk of the fire spreading – never start a fire in dry weather or when there is a fire ban. Once you have lit a fire, be sure to extinguish it properly before moving on.

NOTE! Due to the extremely dry weather, we currently do not recommend anyone to start a fire in nature!

8. Fishing is not part of the right of public access. However, it is free to fish with a rod, and some other hand gear, along the coasts and in our five largest lakes: Lake Vänern, Lake Vättern, Lake Mälaren, Hjälmaren and Storsjön. If you want to fish in other waters, a fishing license or other permit is required.

The right of public access has been constitutionally protected right since 1994, the main purpose of which is to give all people the opportunity to, largely free, move in forests and land. The right of public acess is not only a right, but there are also obligations that we who use it need to take into account, towards nature and wildlife, landowners and other people.
